Cleaning, sanitizing, and odor control addresses what's left behind once water is extracted and the structure is dry – contamination from the water itself, and the musty odor that water damage almost always leaves if it's not properly treated at the source, not just masked.
We provide this in Portland, OR as part of most water damage jobs, especially when the water involved was gray or black water – meaning it came from a source like a sewer backup, appliance overflow, or storm flooding rather than a clean supply line break. Even clean water situations often leave behind odor if drying wasn't fast enough or thorough enough.
We use antimicrobial treatments on affected surfaces to address bacteria and prevent mold growth, especially in areas that stayed wet for an extended period. For odor, we don't rely on air fresheners or masking agents – we use ozone treatment or hydroxyl generators depending on the situation, which break down odor molecules at the source rather than covering them up. This matters most in cases where water sat for a while before we were called, since that's when odor tends to set into porous materials like drywall and subfloor.
Cost depends on the extent of contamination, how large an area needs treatment, and whether odor has set into material that requires more intensive treatment.
